An active Decatur Community Club sponsors the annual Riverfront Days celebration in June, and other activities for young and old throughout the year. For further information regarding any of these celebrations, please contact the village office at (402) 349-5360.
The Decatur Volunteer Fire & Rescue kick off the celebrations each year with a dance to live music in the new Fire Hall at the Annual Fireman's Ball on the first Saturday of February.
A Chili Cook-Off is held the last Saturday
in March. Contestants are not limited to Decatur residents. Winners of first
through third places receive trophies. Each entrant pays an entry fee and prepares
one crock pot of chili. After samples are removed for judging, the public is
invited to purchase samples of each for a nominal fee.
An Easter Egg Hunt is held for youngsters
by six age categories ranging from 2 and under through 6th grade. The children
hunt for plastic eggs each containing a dime and for one large golden egg
in each of the age groups. The lucky child finding the golden egg receives
a five dollar bill.
Hard work becomes a festival in Decatur early in
May as community members gather to volunteer for Clean-Up Decatur Day.
Several large dumpsters are brought in so that residents can discard large items
which can't be included with the weekly garbage pickup. Items which can be discarded
on this day are old tires, furniture, appliances, abandoned autos, etc. If residents
are unable to get these items to the dumpsters, a phone call will bring a volunteer
to pick them up at their curbside.
Memorial Day weekend offers many activities
including the annual Alumni Banquet. Alumni from all graduating classes are
invited to gather together for a dinner and program. The 25-year class
plans the banquet. The 25-year and 50-year classes are the honored classes.
Many classes hold a class party prior to the banquet.
Memorial Day is observed with a program
sponsored on alternate years by the VFW Post and American Legion Post and their
auxiliaries. The program begins at City Hall with a community sing-a-long of
patriotic songs, presentations by local children and a guest speaker. Services
conclude at Hillcrest Cemetery.
